STAGE Bregenz

Successful Start for the New Art Fair STAGE Bregenz

First edition shows the potential of the Lake Constance Region – next fair: 20 to 23 March 2025

Bregenz, 28 February 2024 – Contemporary art, design and cultural cooperation in the region around Lake Constance: The first STAGE Bregenz took place successfully across four days. More than 5,500 visitors filled the Festspielhaus Bregenz between 22 and 25 February. At the première, 45 international galleries from nine European countries presented works by around 100 artists. The next edition takes place from 20 to 23 March 2025.

We have shown that strong, cross-border regional cooperation can produce an art fair of an international standard – and that it doesn’t need a big city setting. We were able to convince not just experts but also a wide audience of art lovers to attend’, said a delighted Renger van den Heuvel, Founder and Managing Director of STAGE Bregenz. The première of the new format came to a successful close on Sunday evening. More than 5,500 visitors spent four days enjoying art in a very special atmosphere. ‘The unique architecture of the Festspielhaus Bregenz made it a perfect platform for art that was positively received by everyone’, reports van den Heuvel.

45 galleries from nine countries were represented with around 100 artists at the first STAGE Bregenz. Sections curated by Fiammetta Griccioli and Elise Lammer and a special exhibition with photographs from the Collection of the Province of Vorarlberg curated by Verena Kasper-Eisert combined with the main section to create a richly varied show. And interaction was the order of the day at the STAGE Treff: The programme addressing the issue of sustainability that was organised by Matylda Krzykowski brought the general public together with figures from art, architecture and design. And Krzykowski was also responsible for the mise-en-scène of the foyer and the entrance area.

Special projects and cooperations
The activation of the cultural energy of the Lake Constance Region is one of the main objectives of STAGE Bregenz. The first fair included such projects as the Opernatelier with Hugo Canoilas, a collaboration between Kunsthaus Bregenz and the Bregenz Festival, the installation ‘Light Glass’ by James Turrell in cooperation with Zumtobel and a special exhibition from the Werkraum Bregenzerwald. A number of cooperative ventures with institutions from Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany rounded off the fair experience.

STAGE Bregenz 2025
The second edition of STAGE Bregenz will take place from 20 to 23 March 2025. Sustainability, collaborative projects with institutions from the surrounding four countries and cooperation with external curators will also play a central role in 2025.

About STAGE Bregenz
STAGE Bregenz is a new format of art fair that is based on regional strengths and a network that – thanks to its location on Lake Constance – crosses borders and brings together a wide range of disciplines. The fair is open to a wide audience that is interested in art and design. The participating galleries from a number of European countries exhibit works by regionally and internationally active artists. The overall programme of STAGE Bregenz in the Festspielhaus – itself a leading example of modern Vorarlberg architecture – illustrates all that the region has to offer. As a result, STAGE Bregenz is an inspiring platform and gathering place for lovers of contemporary art, design and architecture. By principally focussing on the region around Lake Constance, STAGE Bregenz is seizing the opportunity to develop sustainably, independent of the global market. The Founder and Managing Director is Renger van den Heuvel.
